A handicap is a measure of how many strokes above par a person will need on a typical day.

In stroke play, each player’s handicap is deducted from their final score and this is the number used to determine who won the round.

Professionals do not use handicaps. A person with a handicap of zero or less is referred to as a scratch golfer.
